The exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion \u00bbWhat do you see when you close your eyes?\u00ab which was deve\u00adlo\u00adped during the THIS<\/span> IS<\/span> FAKE<\/span> \u2013 RESIDENCY<\/span> I consists of four content-rela\u00adted virtual reality works, spatial instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons, objects and an archive. The star\u00adting point were various ques\u00adti\u00adons about the central term \u00bbremi\u00adnis\u00adcence\u00ab, which arise in the fields of tension between virtual reality, digi\u00adtiza\u00adtion and the real reality of a city like Zeitz in Saxony-Anhalt. Using tech\u00adni\u00adques such as immer\u00adsion, embo\u00addi\u00adment and digi\u00adtal record\u00ading, perso\u00adnal narra\u00adti\u00adves of East German iden\u00adtity, German unity and post-reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion are brought toge\u00adther with topics of inter\u00adnet culture such as online iden\u00adti\u00adties and avatarism. Toge\u00adther, the pieces add up to a multi\u00adme\u00addia compo\u00adsi\u00adtion with a total stay of around 45 minu\u00adtes.<\/p>\n

The first VR<\/span> piece called \u00bbMEMORY<\/span>\u00ab enab\u00adles the viewer to connect spaces and places that have been digi\u00adtally preser\u00adved with the help of photo\u00adgram\u00adme\u00adtry to perso\u00adnal stories and expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces of people from Zeitz. Concep\u00adtual spaces emerge which re-construct and high\u00adlight the topics of child\u00adhood and adole\u00adscence in the GDR<\/span>, work\u00admanship, German reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion and the time after the reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

In the VR<\/span> work \u00bbREFLECTION<\/span>\u00ab, the viewer is liter\u00adally put into an extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary situa\u00adtion: while one\u2019s body is appar\u00adently repla\u00adced by an anima\u00adtion recor\u00added using motion capture, the own move\u00adments are trans\u00admit\u00adted to the person oppo\u00adsite. Due to this shift in exter\u00adnal and self-percep\u00adtion and also the feeling of double presence, the conver\u00adsa\u00adtion with the actress Henri\u00adette Ross\u00adner-Sauer\u00adbier, who lives and works in Zeitz, turns into a dialo\u00adgue not only about her perso\u00adnal history around the reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion but also about the visitor\u2019s own expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces.<\/p>\n

The world is chan\u00adging, and with it the envi\u00adron\u00adment of work as we know it today. The VR<\/span> piece \u00bbMOTION<\/span>\u00ab nego\u00adtia\u00adtes the disap\u00adpearance of work\u00admanship in a thea\u00adter-like setting. Low-poly style avatars perform heavy physi\u00adcal work, which move\u00adments were captu\u00adred by motion capture, but without actually working on the space or on visi\u00adble mate\u00adri\u00adals.<\/p>\n

\u00bb<\/span>The future is alre\u00adady here \u2013 it\u2019s just not very evenly distri\u00adbu\u00adted.\u00ab \u2013 William Gibson. The fourth VR<\/span> piece \u00bbFICTION<\/span>\u00ab invi\u00adtes the viewer to choose a new body in the form of an avatar inside a room simi\u00adlar to a dres\u00adsing room. \u00bbYou can be whate\u00adver you want!\u00ab is the postu\u00adlate. The construc\u00adtions of sexua\u00adlity, gender, ancestry and physi\u00adcal charac\u00adte\u00adris\u00adtics will no longer play a role in a utopian future. At the same time, inter\u00adviews can be heard from people who are alre\u00adady spen\u00adding their time in digi\u00adtal worlds and are speaking about their expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces with avatars.<\/p>\n

A connec\u00adting element in the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion is the archive, the \u00bbInter\u00adnet Caf\u00e9\u00ab with two compu\u00adters. Finds of analog photos, CDs, VHS<\/span> tapes and other inter\u00adview excerpts are stored there. With a mouse click, visi\u00adtors can navi\u00adgate through the arte\u00adfacts and learn more about Zeitz, the GDR<\/span> and the post-reuni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion period.<\/p>\n
